LANSING, Mich. - In a show of support and recognition for the Blue Star Mothers of America, Sen. Mark Huizenga co-sponsored a resolution, which was adopted by the Michigan Senate, to honor these remarkable women. Blue Star Mothers are mothers, stepmothers, grandmothers, foster mothers, and female legal guardians who have a family member actively serving in the military. The organization, founded in Flint in 1942, has since spread to every corner of the nation.

Senator Huizenga expressed his deep appreciation and gratitude for the work of the Blue Star Mothers, stating, "It is hard to overstate the tremendous impact of our Blue Star Mothers in supporting, honoring, and caring for our veterans and the brave men and women currently serving our country." He further emphasized the importance of recognizing the outstanding and dedicated work of these mothers, who provide support to service members in hospitals and offer assistance to families who have lost loved ones in service.

Having a personal connection to the military, with a son currently serving in the Marines, Senator Huizenga understands the sacrifices made by servicemembers and their families. Thus, his support for the resolution to commemorate Blue Star Mother's Day in Michigan on February 1, 2024, holds a special significance.

The resolution, known as Senate Resolution 89, not only honors the Blue Star Mothers but also highlights the organization's various purposes and activities. These include perpetuating the memory of those who have served in the armed forces, welcoming home returning veterans, visiting wounded veterans in hospitals and rehabilitation centers, and assisting in veterans ceremonies. Additionally, the Blue Star Mothers attend patriotic rallies and meetings, maintain allegiance to the government of the United States, care for unsupported mothers who have given their sons and daughters to the service of the nation, provide moral support for members, and uphold American institutions of freedom, justice, and equal rights.

To commemorate the adoption of Senate Resolution 89, members of the Blue Star Mothers of America were welcomed to the state Capitol by Senator Huizenga, along with Sen. Rick Outman and Sen. Lana Theis. It was a moment of celebration and gratitude for the incredible work done by these mothers.
