Kent District Library issued the following announcement on Sept. 13.
Whether you’ve had a “Cruel Summer” or you’re basking in the “Afterglow” of a great one, Taylor Swift has got you covered. Her highly anticipated album Lover debuted on the charts in late August and enjoyed three million album sales in its first week of release. Collaborations with artists such as the Dixie Chicks and Brendon Urie of Panic! At the Disco allow Swift to use her signature emotional honesty to appeal to a wide audience. Jack Antonoff, lead singer of the band Bleachers, produced much of the album and delivers to fans a number of songs reminiscent of the synth-pop sound that defined Swift’s 1989 era. Swift isn’t the only female vocal powerhouse in the game, however. While you’re waiting for your Lover hold to come in, you might want to check out the following albums.
Sheryl Crow’s newest album Threads features a number of guest artists, including Stevie Nicks, Maren Morris, and Bonnie Raitt. Also newly released is Lana Del Rey’s sixth studio album, NFR! It has been hailed as an instant folk-pop classic and, similar to Lover, enjoys the production influence of Antonoff. If you listen carefully, you can also hear his work on Lorde’s 2017 album Melodrama. Maybe sound production isn’t your thing, however, and you prefer to focus on the lyrics of a song. In that case, you’ll want to find yourself a copy of Lizzo’s Cuz I Love You. Pitchfork’s review of the album claims that it is “something of a thesis on internalized and externalized confidence.” Lizzo preaches body-positivity and self-love to fans while playing a flute AND twerking. Now that’s multi-tasking!
If you’re still looking for some new music, you might want to give some up-and-coming artists a chance. Consider trying out Golden Hour by Kacey Musgraves, Immunity by Clairo, and The Highwomen’s eponymous record The Highwomen.
