Kent District Library issued the following announcement on Oct. 8.
Celia C. Perez is back at it with a brand new chapter book all about spunky, quirky and smart young girls. In her newest release, Strange Birds: A Field Guide to Ruffling Feathers, four girls who are as different from one another as night and day find themselves thrown together. When Lane Disanti is stuck at her grandma’s mansion for the summer with no friends, she takes matters into her own hands. I mean, literally, she creates invites to a secret meeting at said mansion and drops them into three random backpacks. Those three backpacks happened to belong to Ofelia Castillo, budding journalist, Aster Douglass, culinary enthusiast, and Catharina Garcia, bird conservationist. When they meet, everyone is a little apprehensive. I mean you would be too if some random girl with a mansion suddenly invited you over for a secret meeting. But when Cat informs the group that the hat used to crown Miss Flora (think top Girl Scout and beauty pageant queen) is made of real bird feathers, the group decides to take up the cause and try to get the Floras to stop using the crown. Friendships are made, wild times are had, mayhem is caused... but do they succeed? I guess you’ll have to pick the book up to find out!
Now if you can’t get your hands on a copy of this brand new book, we’ve got a few other suggestions to tide you over until your hold comes in! First up on the list are some more summer adventures. The first is actually a graphic novel called Be Prepared by Vera Brosgol. In this wonderful graphic novel, we follow our main character, a slightly awkward Russian girl named Vera. She is dying to fit in with the other girls at her school, the ones who can afford cute clothes, live in fancy houses and spend their summers living their best lives at summer camp. But, alas, Vera’s mother just can’t afford most summer camps, but she finds a Russian camp that fits the bill. Vera is excited to finally fit in with people like her, but when she gets to camp, she not only hasn’t escaped the cool girl drama, but now she’s stuck learning endless Russian history facts and a disgusting outhouse. What a nightmare!
The next book is a bit of a blast from the past! One Crazy Summer by Rita Garcia-Williams takes place in the summer of 1968. Our main character Delphine and her two younger sisters are sent across the country from sunny Oakland, California to the heart of Brooklyn, New York. Why? To spend time with a mother they don’t really know all too well. Which makes things a little awkward and a bit cold for the summer. And instead of a fun summer in California, the three sisters are dropped off at a day camp every day and are basically ignored by the woman who is supposed to be their mother. Now we know their summer can’t be a complete bore because of the title, but you’ll have to read about their crazy shenanigans in this book!
If you’re more of a bird-watcher or if you became interested in learning a little more about birds after reading Strange Birds, then you should give Moonbird: A Year on the Wind with the Great Survivor B95 a read! This book is all about a bird who has been given the nickname Moonbird because of all of the miles scientists have recorded it flying. This bird is a shoebird who belongs to the subspecies rufa and is one of very few left. Grab this book to learn all about this particular feathery friend and the journeys scientists have recorded him taking as he struggles to survive.
Kakapo Rescue: Saving the World's Strangest Parrot is a little bit of a literal take on the title “Strange Birds” and is all about a group of kakapo parrots who live on a remote island off New Zealand. This group of ninety-one birds is the last of its kind and this book tells you all about the efforts New Zealand’s National Kakapo Recovery Team has taken to try and save them!
