Kent District Library issued the following announcement on Dec. 19.
Susan is the Youth Specialist at our Plainfield Twp. Branch. We all know she's great at presenting storytimes and recommending books, but here's your chance to learn more about this wonderful member of the KDL staff.
My hero is…
Irene Gut Opdyke. She was a Polish teenager raped, beaten and left for dead by WWII soldiers. She lived, was sent to a concentration camp to work and caught the eye of a high-ranking German soldier. He took her to be his housekeeper, and she started hiding Jewish people in his barn. He came home early one day and caught her with some of her charges in his kitchen. He didn’t report her, but forced her to become his mistress and forbade her from her rescue activities. She gave in to his sexual blackmail, but defied him and continued to hide people for the rest of the war. I heard her speak when I was in college and have held her in the highest regard ever since.
The best book I have ever read is…
Life After Life by Kate Atkinson. It’s part historical fiction, part time travel, part thriller, and all around fantastic.
If I had a day all to myself, I would spend my time…
Getting a hot stone massage, a facial and then going home to read, scrapbook and go for a walk.
The best advice I have ever received is…
Love isn’t a feeling; love is an action verb. You can’t love someone unless you are loving toward them.
If I could meet one person – dead or alive – I would you choose…
My grandmother. She died when my mother was two, and I would love to see what she was like.
The talent I really wish I had is…
To be able to sing really well or dance really well.
The best trip I have ever taken was to…
Ireland. What a beautiful country! We were there for a wedding in a castle, so we spent the week with family seeing the sights and enjoying each other’s company.
My proudest accomplishment is…
I’m a good mom. I raised two strong daughters who are compassionate, sensible, and thoughtful.
Something people would be surprised to find out about me is…
I hate going barefoot. I have to wear slippers or shoes almost 100% of the time.
When I was a child, I wanted to grow up to be…
An archeologist briefly, but mostly a teacher. I adored my 2nd grade teacher and wanted to be just like her.
Three things I couldn’t live without are…
Books, family and dessert
If I ever wrote a book, it would be called…
Constantly Surprised by Life
