Danny Trevino, a marijuana dispensary owner from Lansing who operated several locations throughout Michigan, was sentenced to more than 15 years in federal prison.
Trevino, 47, has been convicted of 10 counts of trafficking marijuana, according to WoodTV.com. Prosecutors said that Trevino had been stockpiling more than half a ton of marijuana. He also had previously been convicted of drug charges, which means, under state law, that he would be ineligible to become a caregiver and to own a dispensary.
Besides being a dispensary owner, Trevino also had posted videos of himself on YouTube. In those videos he gave himself the title “Professor of Pot.”
Former U.S. Attorney Patrick Miles told WoodTV.com, “Sometimes federal prosecutors have no choice; they’ve got to follow the law. And if someone is flouting the law, they’re going to bring a case."
In 2008 voters approved the legalization of medical marijuana in Michigan, and the sale of recreational marijuana became legal in late 2019. However, under federal law, marijuana is still illegal and is considered a Schedule I controlled substance.
