Montcalm County Commissioner Tony Sorensen will not run for his post in this year’s election.

Sorensen, a Trufant resident who was appointed to the county’s District 8 seat to replace predecessor Tom Porter last October, submitted a Mar. 22 letter to Board of Commissioners Chairman Patrick Q. Carr, announcing his decision not to run for election in the August primary.

“I have a newfound understanding of and appreciation for the immense responsibilities of this position in serving the people of District 8 and the county as a whole,” Sorensen wrote, according to the Daily News. “It is with much consideration I have decided to not run for District 8 commissioner in the upcoming election. I felt it best to make my intentions known now to allow the constituency of District 8 needed time to identify a qualified candidate(s) to run for this commissioner position. I hope my district will find someone with the necessary time and availability needed to give this position the attention it deserves."
