Kalamazoo Public Schools issued the following announcement on Apr. 8.
Dear Voters,
I hope you and your family are doing as well as possible during this difficult time. Kalamazoo Public Schools is doing what we can to support our staff, students, and families. We have distributed over 150,000 meals to students since March 16. We are providing learning packets at our 24 food distribution sites as well as providing online resources for families and teachers. Over 1,000 Chromebooks have been provided to high school students. With the closing of schools and the need for social distancing to keep us healthy, we are also attending to the social and emotional needs of our staff, students, and families.
The election on May 5 will be the first primarily mail-in election in state history due to the COVID-19 stay-at-home restrictions. The Kalamazoo Regional Educational Service Agency Regional Enhancement Millage Renewal Proposal is on the ballot. This Enhancement Millage is a vital part of our school district’s budget. It provides about $364 per student, or $4.6 million, to our general fund budget. It is being used for the operations of our district, such as instruction, transportation, custodial services, technology services, and etc.
I would urge you to read the enclosed Frequently Asked Question (FAQ) document to learn more about this millage before you vote.
Thank you very much.
Sincerely,
Gary L. Start
Interim Superintendent
