Kalamazoo Public Schools issued the following announcement on May 19.
On May 14, Kalamazoo Public Schools (KPS) announced that KPS high schools would hold virtual graduations in June in lieu of live, in-person ceremonies. KPS opted to hold virtual graduations based on the COVID-19 pandemic, the current restrictions on the assembly of large audiences in the state of Michigan, and not knowing when these restrictions might be lifted.
There have been numerous requests to hold in-person graduation ceremonies since Thursday’s announcement. In response to these requests, KPS today announced tentative plans to hold in-person commencement ceremonies in August. The dates for the following schools would be:
Tuesday, Aug. 4: Phoenix High School
Wednesday, Aug. 5: Loy Norrix High School
Thursday, Aug. 6: Kalamazoo Central High School
The ability to hold graduation ceremonies in August will be dependent on Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s orders and safety guidelines. Details regarding the time, location, and any restrictions on the number of guests allowed to attend will be announced at a later date.
