In an effort to support Michigan small business owners who have been affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, Rep. Mark Huizenga (R-Walker) voted in favor of two bills that would allow individuals and businesses to delay their summer 2020 property tax payments.

According to House Fiscal Agency Legislative Analysis, summer 2020 property tax payments could be deferred without penalty or interest until February 28, 2021. To offset the loss of revenue, counties could apply for a loan from the Department of Treasury to be repaid by June 1, 2021.

"Main Street USA is hurting," Huizenga said in a Facebook post. "Michigan's small businesses are vital parts of our community and support many families in my district and beyond. We need to think creatively about how to best support these community staples during this uncertain time so we can support the families that rely on them for employment, goods and services."

House Bills 5761 and 5810 aim to allow businesses and individuals to defer one of the largest bills paid annually, without interest, for this year only.
