Kalamazoo Public Schools issued the following announcement on July 15.
Kalamazoo Public Schools has announced plans for in-person graduation ceremonies for Loy Norrix, Kalamazoo Central, and Phoenix high schools and the Kalamazoo Innovative Learning Program (KILP).
• Phoenix High School and KILP, 6 p.m. Aug. 4, at Chenery Auditorium, 714 S. Westnedge Ave.
• Loy Norrix High School, 6 p.m. Aug. 5, at Loy Norrix’s Kasdorf Auditorium, 606 E. Kilgore Road
• Kalamazoo Central High School, 6 p.m. Aug. 6, at Kalamazoo Central Auditorium, 2432 N. Drake Road
The district is committed to creating safe, socially-distanced, in-person ceremonies. Graduating seniors and a limited number of guests will arrive at staggered, designated times. Facilities will be thoroughly disinfected before the events, face coverings are required to attend, and social distancing practices will be observed. The ceremonies will be live-streamed, with special pre-recorded sections, on the KPS YouTube and Facebook channels.
“As an educator, graduation day is one of my favorite days of the school year,” said Superintendent Rita Raichoudhuri. “Not only is it a time to celebrate the students’ academic achievements, it is also a time to celebrate the bonds formed with friends, teachers, and others in their school community.
“We know this year’s graduation ceremony will not look exactly like the one seniors have dreamed of since elementary school. Nonetheless, we want them to know that, even from a distance, many people from Kalamazoo Public Schools and in the larger community will be thinking of them on their graduation day and celebrating their achievements.”
Details about each school’s graduation ceremony will be sent to seniors and their families.
