Kalamazoo Public Schools issued the following announcement on Aug. 1.
The Kalamazoo Public Schools graduation ceremonies scheduled for Aug. 4-6 will move outdoors in response to Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s latest executive order limiting indoor gatherings to 10 people.
Whitmer’s Executive Orders 2020-160 and 2020-161, amending Michigan’s Safe Start Order, states beginning July 31, indoor gatherings must be limited to 10 people.
“As we see COVID-19 cases continue to rise, Michiganders cannot afford to drop our guard. We must take every step possible to save lives, protect the brave men and women on the front lines, and avoid overwhelming our healthcare system while we continue to combat COVID-19,” Whitmer said. “After seeing a resurgence in cases connected to social gatherings across the state, we must further limit gatherings for the health of our community and economy.”
KPS is committed to holding in-person graduation ceremonies for Loy Norrix, Kalamazoo Central, and Phoenix high schools and the Kalamazoo Innovative Learning Program (KILP), although plans have been slightly amended to accommodate the order.
• Phoenix High School and KILP, will now hold graduation at 6 p.m. Aug. 4, at Loy Norrix High School’s soccer field, 606 E. Kilgore Road.
• Loy Norrix High School, will also celebrate its event on the soccer field, at 6 p.m. Aug. 5, on the school’s soccer field, 606 E. Kilgore Road.
• Kalamazoo Central High School will hold its event at 6 p.m. Aug. 6, on the football field, 2432 N. Drake Road.
Events will be held outdoors rain or shine. Families are urged to prepare for all weather.
Graduating seniors and no more than five guests will arrive at staggered, designated times. Face coverings are required to attend, and social distancing practices will be observed. The ceremonies will be live-streamed, with special pre-recorded sections, on the KPS YouTube channel.
New details about each school’s graduation ceremony are being sent to seniors and their families.
