Success stairs

Kent District Library issued the following announcement on Oct. 8.

Kent District Library is pleased to announce the selection of Christine Mwangi to serve as the new Development Manager. She will plan, create and execute key fundraising strategies for KDL.

“It is an amazing feeling to work for the library system and be able to help contribute to the sustainability and development of an organization that means so much to many in our community,” Mwangi said. “It is indeed a great honor to have a role matched so well to my personal attributes and passion to network and bring people and resources together for the greater good of an organization and staff population that I care so much about.”

After earning her Master of Pharmacy Degree, Mwangi’s professional focus pivoted to the non-profit sector. She founded a non-profit organization, Be a Rose, Inc., that delivers a sustainable solution to period poverty by the provision of period products and reproductive health education to marginalized members of the community. As a Kenyan native and fluent in Swahili, she worked as a Swahili Medical Interpreter for various community organizations. Mwangi later worked as a Program Director for the Lakeshore Ethnic Diversity Alliance where she facilitated courageous dialogue on race, identity, diversity, equity and inclusion with corporate clients. She also worked for the YMCA of Greater Grand Rapids as the Branch Executive Director of the Visser YMCA in Grandville.

Mwangi enjoys volunteering, cooking, podcasting, activism, game nights and spending time with friends and family as well as her two cats, Venus and Serena.
