Blandford Nature Center issued the following announcement on Feb 19.
This Farm Friday, we are highlighting the West Michigan Chapter of National Young Farmers Coalition and their mission to support BIPOC growers. This Chapter is made up of farmers, farmhands, and growers in the Grand Rapids area with the goal of increasing access to land for BIPOC growers to live and grow on.
This all begins with raising funds to put towards supporting growers in attaining land and infrastructure. Land access is the number one barrier for beginning farmers, and this barrier is even higher for BIPOC farmers who are harshly underrepresented in land ownership due to discriminatory practices and make up less than 2% of our current farming population in the United States. The goal is to redistribute power among these groups through land - secure land provides a foundation for community empowerment and resilience, especially when used to grow food.
The West Michigan Chapter of National Young Farmers Coalition believes this is a small step in repairing the long overdue injustices to these groups and hopes that this fund continues past the gofundme goals. If you’re looking for a way to support BIPOC farmers, donating to or sharing their gofundme is a start!
