State Representative and Republican Floor Leader Bryan Posthumus criticized Governor Gretchen Whitmer's recently signed energy package, calling it a "multi-billion-dollar campaign stunt" that will burden the people of Michigan. The package, which includes a 2040 wind and solar energy mandate for utility providers and vehicle manufacturers, has raised concerns about its feasibility and impact on energy affordability and reliability.

Posthumus expressed doubt about the successful implementation of the governor's energy plan, stating, "If the way they passed this law is any indication of the way they will put it into action, I don’t think the people of Michigan should expect a clean energy future by 2040." He further criticized the potential consequences of the package, foreseeing "a decade of Democratic infighting, power struggling, overspending by the state, increased energy costs, and kickback contracts being given out like breath mints to political allies."

According to Posthumus, the energy package is not a real solution to Michigan's energy issues but rather a costly campaign strategy for Governor Whitmer. He suggested that the governor's focus on appeasing coastal elites within her party and her potential presidential ambitions in 2024 have overshadowed the actual needs of Michigan.

The reliability and affordability of Michigan's household energy providers are among Posthumus's primary concerns. He argued that relying solely on wind and solar energy would not guarantee a stable and reliable energy grid. Posthumus emphasized the importance of embracing natural gas and nuclear energy alongside renewable sources, stating, "If we don't embrace natural gas and nuclear energy alongside wind and solar, we cannot in full confidence tell Michigan families their grid is stable or reliable."

Looking ahead to the future, Posthumus expressed hope for changes to the energy plan and the promotion of better ideas that address Michigan's energy needs more effectively. He encouraged a focus on practical solutions rather than pursuing the governor's presidential ambitions.
