House Republican Floor Leader Bryan Posthumus has expressed his concerns following the Michigan Public Service Commission's decision to authorize DTE Energy to raise rates on customers by $368 million, a 6.4% increase. In a statement, Posthumus warned that this rate increase marked the beginning of an era of unprecedented expenses for Michigan families.

"We tried to warn everyone this would happen, and it sure didn't take long: the beginning of an era of unprecedented expenses for Michigan families has begun," Posthumus said. He went on to criticize Governor Whitmer's Green New Deal, stating that it had failed to save people money. "Turns out all that pie in the sky is actually pretty expensive; green energy fairy tales don't pay for themselves," he added.

Posthumus further criticized the commission and Governor Whitmer's administration for ratifying the rate increase, stating that it was a clear indication of their intentions. He compared the situation to a black hole, stating that billions of dollars were being pulled in with no return. "And now it is starting to grow," he warned.

DTE Energy had specifically petitioned the commission for this rate increase, citing the need to comply with the state's wind and solar energy goals. Posthumus pointed out the irony of the rate hike being announced on the same day that Governor Whitmer's population commission released recommendations on how to grow Michigan's population. He blamed Democratic policies for driving people away from the state, making it harder to find jobs and more expensive to raise a family.

"The recipe to grow our population has been demonstrated: Affordable cost of living, safe communities, less red tape for neighborhood job providers, and transformational investment in our urban centers," Posthumus stated. However, he argued that Democratic leadership had chosen to increase utility costs and entertain tax increases proposed by the population commission, which would ultimately burden the people of Michigan.

In conclusion, House Republican Floor Leader Bryan Posthumus expressed his disappointment with the rate increase authorized by the Michigan Public Service Commission. He criticized Governor Whitmer's Green New Deal and Democratic leadership for driving up utility costs and potentially making it harder for families to afford living in the state. Posthumus warned that this marked the beginning of an era of unprecedented expenses for Michigan residents.
