LANSING, Mich. — Sen. Mark Huizenga, a supporter of outdoor recreation initiatives, expressed his backing for a Natural Resources Trust Fund (NRTF) bill aimed at allocating over $27 million to park and trail developments and acquisitions in Michigan. Huizenga, representing R-Walker, highlighted the importance of the NRTF in enhancing public recreation access and improving the quality of life for Michigan families.

In a statement, Huizenga emphasized the significance of outdoor activities for West Michigan families, stating, “Many West Michigan families enjoy spending time outside in nature fishing, hiking, boating, biking, and more.” He noted that the allocated funding would contribute to enhancing outdoor recreational opportunities across the state.

The NRTF, sustained by interest earned on state-owned mineral rights, has a longstanding history of supporting recreational projects in Michigan. Since its establishment in 1976, the NRTF has funded numerous projects totaling $1.3 billion, benefiting communities statewide.

The proposed Senate Bill 817 seeks to authorize the release of $27.3 million from the NRTF to support 35 development projects and 18 land acquisitions throughout Michigan. Local matching funds are expected to supplement this investment, bringing the total amount to $61.5 million.

Specifically, the bill outlines allocations for projects in Kent and Ottawa counties, including the acquisition of a 127-acre dune site in Ottawa County to expand the Rosy Mound Natural Area and create a new park on Lake Michigan. Additionally, funding would support the acquisition of 144 acres for wildlife habitat enhancement in the Rogue River State Game Area.

Huizenga commended the diverse range of projects planned for Kent and Ottawa counties, stating, “From preserving Lake Michigan dunes to improving hiking and biking trails, the five exciting projects in Kent and Ottawa counties illustrate the reason the people of Michigan created the Natural Resources Trust Fund to support vibrant parks and greater access to our outdoors.”

Senate Bill 817 is now set to progress to the House of Representatives for further consideration, with Huizenga encouraging constituents to stay informed about state government matters through his communication channels.
