Laureen Sleight is seeking the Republican nomination to serve as a Douglass Township Trustee for a four-year term. The primary election will be held on August 6.

Per Montcalm County's unofficial candidate list, Sleight is facing Ken Bunting and Eric Tester in the GOP primary. Voters may choose up to two candidates.

Sleight has lived in Douglass Township for ten years. She and her husband have three children, and in addition to working as a medical assistant at a facility in an underserved community, she is also pursuing a degree in medical billing and coding from Ferris.

In a July 10 Facebook post, she said she would like to serve as Douglass Township Trustee because she will "give the trustee job my best efforts because making Douglass better is a part of making my children’s lives and surroundings better. Together, we can make Douglass a better place to live, vacation, and work."

In a press release, Private Property Rights PAC — a political action committee whose "mission is to safeguard and promote the ownership and control of private property" — endorsed Sleight, stating that she "has demonstrated a profound commitment to the principles of property rights and governance that respect the rights of individual property owners" and praising her stance against government overreach.

Private Property Rights PAC Senior Adviser Madeline Morris expressed confidence in Sleight's commitment to private property rights and government transparency and accountability, predicting that she "will help protect the foundational rights that are vital to personal freedom and economic stability" in Douglass Township.

Per the Douglass Township website, the Board comprises two trustees.

According to the Michigan Townships Association, township trustees act as township legislators and are required to vote on all issues. They are also responsible for the fiduciary health of the township and for carrying out any other duties assigned by the township board. Trustees are elected to four-year terms.
