Kent District Library issued the following announcement on Mar. 26.
Times are strange right now. People are afraid, anxious and angry about the situation we are in. There are so many emotions swirling around. Those emotions are contagious and can almost feel tangible at times. Staying positive can be tough as we are isolated and toilet paper and chicken are nowhere to be found.
Even with this being a tough time to be positive, it is important for our mental health to find things to be grateful for. According to Psychology Today, there are several benefits that can be achieved from practicing gratitude. Those benefits include sleeping better at night, being more open to relationships and improved mental and physical health.
“What does practicing gratitude even look like?” you may be asking. Every morning my family has to make a list of five things that they are grateful for. These can be small things or big things, such as a favorite coloring book, access to internet, a library that cares deeply for me and my community. ;) (We do!) Every day they have to add five new things.
This list will get longer and longer and it is fun to look back on and see, and often laugh, over the things written there. During this time, while we are practicing social distancing, this will a bonding experience - bringing your family closer together. When you find yourself feeling anxious and afraid, take a look at your list.
“But I’ve bought a big bat.
I’m all ready, you see.
Now my troubles are going
To have troubles with me!” – Dr. Seuss
