Joining a chorus of those questioning COVID-19-related restrictions set by Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, state Rep. James Lower (R-Greenville) has voiced his opposition to Whitmer's latest executive order.

“What is the definition of success in terms of our overall strategy for dealing with this public health emergency, and what benchmarks are being used to determine that?" Lower said in a statement published on Michigan House Republicans.

While there is a need to take public health and safety seriously, Lower said Whitmer's actions demonstrate a lack of "data, clarity and common sense."

Lower pointed out that other states have permitted the resumption of some normal activity, such as lawn care and nursery operations, contrasted against Whitmer's most recent executive order, which ordered stores to cordon off their lawn-and-garden areas and cease the sale of any plants or seeds.

"People deserve more attention to detail, not more draconian measures," Lower said. "Blocking off sections of stores is basically nonsense and will not help reduce the spread of the virus," he told Michigan House Republicans.
