Today (Dec. 21) is Winter Solstice Day which marks the point at which the North Pole is at its farthest from the sun during its yearly orbit around the sun. Despite the temperature outside, the winter solstice is considered the astronomical beginning of winter.
The date of the winter solstice varies from year to year and can fall anywhere between Dec. 20 - Dec. 23. The reason for this is that the tropical year —the time it takes for the sun to return to the same spot relative to Earth — is different from the calendar year.
Welcome to the winter season!
