LANSING, Mich. — Sen. Mark Huizenga has announced that Ottawa County will be receiving grant funding to make significant improvements to 8th Avenue and Hayes Street. The project aims to enhance efficiency and safety on these important trade routes, providing easy access to I-96.

Huizenga, R-Walker, emphasized the significance of this project, stating, "This is an important trade route that connects different industries to one another and provides easy access to I-96. This project is a great example of the long-term investments we should be making both locally and statewide to improve efficiency and safety on our roadways. It will surely be welcomed by West Michigan businesses and motorists alike."

The grant funding will be utilized to resurface 8th Avenue and Hayes Street from Garfield Street to the Kent County line. The project will involve milling and repaving the existing road surface, widening shoulders, placing new pavement markings, and improving sidewalk ramps to meet ADA standards.

Huizenga further highlighted the significance of this route, explaining that it is crucial for transporting lumber, automotive materials, and agricultural products, serving as a key logistical thoroughfare for Michigan's manufacturing sector. He expressed confidence that these improvements will greatly support a number of key Michigan industries and improve access and safety throughout the region.

The total cost of the project is estimated to be $1,039,500. The state of Michigan will be contributing $375,000, with an additional $664,500 in matching funds provided by the Ottawa County Road Commission.

This grant funding is a testament to the commitment of local and state authorities to invest in infrastructure improvements that will benefit businesses and motorists in Ottawa County and the wider West Michigan region. The project is expected to significantly enhance the transportation network and contribute to the overall economic growth and development of the area.
