Juneteenth commemorates the official end of slavery in Texas on June 19, 1865, two years after the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation. The day is also called Emancipation Day and Freedom Day.
Juneteenth is a time to celebrate, reflect and commit to building a more equitable society. As we observe 157 years since the end of slavery in the United States, we honor the contributions of Black Americans throughout our history, in Kent County and nationwide.
