LANSING, Mich. — Governor Gretchen Whitmer has signed into law Sen. Mark Huizenga's financial disclosure bill, which is part of a bipartisan package aimed at implementing the financial disclosure measures of Proposal 1 of 2022.
"These financial disclosure requirements are a good step toward a more transparent state government and toward better ensuring elected officials are making decisions for the people of Michigan and not for their own personal benefit," said Sen. Huizenga, R-Walker. "They are also examples of the positive solutions we can achieve when we work together — and I hope to see more bipartisan efforts like this in the new year."
The financial disclosure measures were approved by Michigan voters in November 2022, with over 66% of the vote. The constitutional amendment included language that mandates statewide officeholders and members of the Legislature to file an annual financial disclosure report with the state.
Under Senate Bills 613-616, which implement Proposal 1's financial disclosure section, the governor, lieutenant governor, secretary of state, attorney general, members of the Legislature, and candidates for those offices, as well as their spouses in limited instances, will be required to disclose certain financial information every year.
This move towards greater transparency and accountability in Michigan's government is a positive development that will help ensure that elected officials are acting in the best interest of the people they represent. By requiring financial disclosures, the state aims to prevent conflicts of interest and promote public trust in the political process.
Sen. Huizenga's legislation is an important step forward in fulfilling the will of the voters and strengthening the integrity of Michigan's government. It serves as a reminder that bipartisan efforts can lead to tangible results that benefit the citizens of the state.
As we look ahead to the new year, it is crucial that we continue to prioritize transparency and accountability in our government. With more bipartisan efforts like this, we can work together to create a more efficient and trustworthy political system.
The implementation of Proposal 1's financial disclosure measures is a significant achievement for the state of Michigan. It demonstrates the commitment of lawmakers to uphold the will of the people and to work towards a more transparent and accountable government.
In conclusion, the signing of Sen. Huizenga's financial disclosure bill is a positive step towards ensuring that elected officials in Michigan are held accountable and that the interests of the people are prioritized. By working together in a bipartisan manner, lawmakers have shown that they are committed to creating a more transparent and trustworthy political environment.
